SMOKIN’ JOE TRACEY, DRUMS AND VOCALS
Joe began playing drums at the age of 11, influenced by the era of The Ventures and the Surfing music craze. He was also influenced by a 1962 trip to The Metropole in NYC to see Gene Krupa perform. At the age of 12 he received his first set of drums, which were a 1940's-era kit. A band was formed among local friends and they called themselves The Concepts. The Concepts played together for a period of 6 years until High School graduations ended the bands tenure. They covered songs of the day including early Yardbirds, Blues Magoos, Beatles and the Stones. In 1968, the band recorded 2 original songs entitled "Faces Come and Feelings Go" and "Why Don't You Tell Me Now". These 2 songs have recently been signed by Sundazed Records for re-release on a compilation CD of Garage Bands titled “Chicks Are For Kids”.
More recently, Joe formed his own bands, playing Blues in local clubs. Smokin' Joe & the Blues Allstars and Stavin’ Chain were fronted by, among others, Ted Hennessy, Willie Pierce, Wild Bill Hesch and Charlie Smith and included members such as Steve Katz, Mike Tremante, Jimmy (the Greek) Amanitides, Hymer T. Morgan and Tad Holtz. Stavin’ Chain was the opening act for Omar & The Howlers at Troy NY’s Revolution Hall and opened for The James Solberg Band at Collar City Live’s Take Me To The River Blues Festival.
Joe’s knowledge of all music styles keeps him in demand and he has filled in with several local bands such as Doc Orloff’s Blues Elixir, The Foy Brothers, The Buckadelics, House Project and the Surfin’ band The Rumble Kings, among others. During Joe’s time with them, the Blues Elixir was featured at the 2006 2-day Lake George Blues Blast and rocked the house at Duffy’s Tavern in Lake George after the Festival. Joe also has played with Big Jack Johnson, George Boone and Joe Roy Jackson.
